What causes a modem to loose its connection without dropping carrier?

My US Robotics modem often looses its connection (can no longer get on the internet), but the modem retains carrier. In order to get back online I have to disconnect and redial. What causes this?|||Line noise will cause that. When you have excessive line noise, but not so much as to cause you to disconnect, the modem will try to renegotiate a slower speed with the other side.

Sometimes this can take a very long time, since it can't get a satisfactory negotiation with the other side if there is a lot of line noise. It may keep just trying to renegotiate forever without succeeding.

Disconnecting and reconnecting will clear up the line sometimes.|||When the activity stops so does the connection.
