I know some carriers are perfectly safe, but I have always heard that you need to wait a while (2 to 3 months) to put a baby in the type of carrier where their legs hang due to an immature spine.
A friend of mine started walking with her baby at 10 days in one of these type carriers. Do you think it is safe? The baby is facing her, but the legs "dangle". I thought this was too much pressure on the end of the spinal cord.|||Ok i found the link to the article about this but to add it was written in the 90's and since then many improvements on carriers have been made but many havent....So yes if she uses it alot and its the type where the baby hangs at the crotch it can lead to problems later in life but if she doesnt use it 24/7 then he should be fine and he needs to be the minimum weight to be using it as well theres no age requirement....If she want to wear him all the time i would suggest either a ring sling or a wrap type sling that properly supports their weight. I have a moby and have to say its the most comfortable thing and both my babies love it and it supports their hips and back very well.....
http://continuum-concept.org/reading/spi鈥?/a>|||I used a sling the first week after my son was born--he was a heavy nurser, so I wanted the ease and closeness a sling provides. I used it until he was about 7 months--they are so comfortable.
We used a front hanging backback harness (I forget the brand--a Baby Bjorn, I think from Babies R Us) by the end of the first month--so my husband could carry the baby around too. It was made so the baby could face front or towards the chest and it had great head and neck support.
Seeing as my son is now three and a half, perfectly healthy, and a vicious T-Ball player, runner, and bicyclist--I'm thinking we didn't do significant damage to his spine while toting him about in the backpack.|||it really all depends on the type of carrier and how it supports the infant. with my son, i had 2 different carriers and 1) i could use around 2 months and the other one i couldnt use till he was about 3 1/2. some of the carriers out there can be hard on a newborns neck and spine.
for tiny babies i would possibly suggest the sling.|||i think there is a weight requirement rather than age. I'm pretty sure the baby bjorn style carriers are a minimum 3kg weight. But so long as the carrier is a good quality one like the baby bjorn i don't think it matters on their spine so long as their body is being supported correctly|||this is fine as long as the support straps are tight and the baby is safe!
there are ages on all baby items so look on the packaging/ labeling for more advice.
they manufactors would not be able to sell it with out a recommended safe age range.
hope this helps|||hmmm good question i had one like that and it said 7+ pounds i still had to wait til he was a few weeks old or so because he wasn't 7 pounds yet. i'm going to star
