How to find out which phone carrier handles certain phone exchanges?

I've come across a few unused phone numbers that I'd like to own, and I'd also like to check all other exchanges in my calling area, but Verizon told me that some of the exchanges are on different carriers. Is there a site that could tell me which exchanges are carried by which carrier?|||http://www.thedirectory.org/pref/

I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for?

cant you use GrandCentral.com to get the number you want, and then just forward it!!|||This wont always be accurate, due to number portability. People take their numbers with when switching carriers.|||You can do this on the NANPA (North American Numbering Plan Administration) web site:

http://www.nationalnanpa.com/about_us/ab鈥?/a>

Just run the following "Utilized Codes Report":

http://www.nanpa.com/nas/public/assigned鈥?/a>

To run the report, just select the "State" and "Area Code" and then Continue...

The report may take a few seconds to run...

Then, look-up the 3-digit exchange number you want your numbers with.

The report will tell you which Carrier is "Assigned" that block of exchange numbers.
