I am travelling with my 8 lb Yorkie soon and wanted to know what the best airline approved pet carrier was. Thanks!|||The main thing is that it must have ventilation for the animal and be secured at all times. There are several different kinds that are approved, the main importance is that it must fit under the seat in front of you and the animal can not be removed during any point of the duration of the flight. I've checked in passengers that had what looked like a small duffle bag with mesh sides, and you also have the hard cases with metal front enclosures. The bag is easier to carry and allows your hands to be free. The size of the case must be perportionate to the dog as well. It must have room to be able to move.
Airlines use and some still sell Sky Kennels. But, for a small dog, again I recommend a carrying bag if you are able to do so.
Also, either call ahead of time and have your reservation documented that you will have a cabin pet. There are only 2 cabin pets allowed in coach for the flight and 1 in first class. Its a first come first serve basis. When you check in you will do so at the ticket counter and advise the agent you have a cabin pet. The agent will verify your carrying case or kennel is apprpriate size and is an approved container for travel. Then they will tag the case. This tag must remain visible at all times. The agent will ask the name, breed and weight of the pet. When you get to the gate, check in again and let the gate agent know you are carrying a pet. Once on board the aircraft, the flight attendant will need to see the tag as well.
Hope this helps some.
