If you are a rural carrier, how do you convert to a city carrier with the post office?

I am applying to become a rural carrier, but I really want to be a city carrier. Do you have to start as a RCA first, and as the position for city carrier open, they assign you individually? Or do you have to apply separately? How does that work exactly since in my state the city carrier job posting is very scarce? Thanks!|||You cannot convert from a rural carrier position to a city carrier position. If you are hired as an RCA, you still must pass the the city carrier exam which is infrequently offered and have a high score.

These are two separate exams but test the same core material. In this district you must get at least a 85 on the exam to be hired, if and win they are hiring for city carriers.

If I were you, I'd try to stick it out as an RCA and try to make rural PTF.

The long term job forecast is much better for rural carriers than it is for city carriers.|||First apply only thru a USPS site. There are scams out there ! Each job is posted and must be applied for separately. The USPS is semi-union in that it has strict rules on movement among jobs. Try to talk to a current or recently retired employee. They will have current knowledge. Also, don't fall for the companies that offer to help you raise your test scores and get a job. ALL are bogus. Go thru proper channels as listed above. Good Luck !|||You have to take the City Carrier test. That's what I did after passing the Rural one first and working for about 1 1/2 years as an RCA. I took the City test several times and when I finally got a very good score I got hired. It's going to take at least a 90 to get the city job.
